Goosemoor - new house

This 3 bedroom house and garage has been designed for a second generation member of an Exmoor farming family in close proximity to the main farm complex, on a steeply sloping green-field site.
The client was seeking a contemporary design solution which needed to blend with the Exmoor National Park planning authority's requirement for the appearance of a traditional farm house utilising local materials.
In responding to the slope of the land, the house and garage progressively step up from the two storey south elevation of the house to the single storey garage at the higher level, in the ideal location for the new driveway approach. The land was partially excavated, providing some of the cladding stone, with the remainder collected from the local area to ensure that those parts of the exterior remained sustainably relevant to the local environment.

The outlook from the upper level is excellent so it houses the living accommodation with ground level entry and egress at the north end next to the garage and to the west elevation terrace. Sleeping accommodation and utility functions are on the lower ground floor which extends below the garage.
Initially designed as connected buildings, Planning policy required us to separate the garage from the house to prevent the possible future conversion of the garage to extra accommodation. In doing so, we have retained the proximity and alignment so that if future policies permit, wider options remain available.
